Eight Years On, We Must Not Forget — In Memory of Liu Xiaobo

Eight years ago, Liu Xiaobo passed away in the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang, under surveillance and imprisonment by the Chinese Communist regime. He died at the age of 61. Until his final moments, he was denied the chance to seek medical treatment abroad, stripped even of his last dignity.

He was neither a conspirator nor a man of violence. He was an intellectual who called for freedom of speech and promoted constitutional reform. He said: “I have no enemies.” — a belief he defended with ten years of prison life.

My father was one of the co-initiators of Charter 08, and for this, our entire family became targets of persecution. My father lost his job, our family’s livelihood was cut off, and we continue to bear the cost to this day. What kind of government cannot even tolerate voices of criticism, yet dares to call itself “the people’s government”? Liu Xiaobo’s death was nothing less than the murder of truth by the state.

Today, I cannot remain silent. Even writing these words is a form of mourning, a form of witness.

May Liu Xiaobo rest in peace.
May his thoughts and spirit continue to live among us.
May we never let the candle go out, even if only one remains in the darkness.
